The Wanganui premier rugby championship Grand Hotel Challenge Shield changed hands for the third time in as many weeks when Waverley Harvesting Border held on to pip Taihape 34-31 at Dallison Park in Waverley today (Good Friday).
Border registered two victories In the only two games played on Good Friday in the fifth round of qualifying fixtures in the Tasman Tanning championship, played over Easter Weekend.
Other fifth round premier and senior games will be played on Easter Saturday.
The Border senior team continued an unbeaten run for the season, beating Taihape 16-7 in the premier curtain-raiser.
Border scored the first three tries on the premier game, opening up a 22-3 lead before Taihape, who had taken the Challenge Shield off Harvey Round Motors Ratana 17-0 the previous weekend, scored two converted tries to close the margin to 22-17 at half-time.
Halfback Lindsay Horrocks, the Man of the Match, scored two of Border’s five tries. Sikeli Ulukuta contributed 14 points with a try, penalty goal and three conversions.
Taihape first five Tom Wells scored 11 points with a penalty goal and conversion of all four of his team’s tries. Taihape collected two consolation points – losing the game by less than seven points and scoring four tries.
Border’s first defence of the Shield will be away against Ratana on Saturday, April, 26th.
