Obituary | Wayne Te Huia b. 1952 d. 28.08.2014

waynetehuiaWanganui Rugby mourns the sad loss of a great volunteer and long serving servant to Raetihi, Ruapehu, Rangitikei and Wanganui Junior Rugby.

Wayne Te Huia, commonly known to us all as ‘GOONKS’.

Such was the character of this man, for all his individual traits and efforts, his heart and soul was always in favour of the youth in the region and the rugby environment and experience he created for the many players that have represented the numerous teams he has coached.

We also acknowledge that this loss is more than just a coach, but an ‘UNCLE’ to the many kids that represented his teams.

A loyal, happy go lucky, humorous individual who was always recognised for all the wrong reasons, (those members who know him, will relate very well to that statement). Shock has rocked the region with this sad loss, and he is survived by his very supportive, warm and welcoming wife Rauna and extended family.

I would quip at times that he was the ‘Mayor of Raetihi’, a chief in his own right, but no one can take away the memories and friendships forged through his generosity and kind nature.

His record speaks for itself and many tears will be shed as I am sure smile and laughter.  We farewell a man who gave everything and sacrificed so much for the betterment of youth in the greater Wanganui rugby region. Farewell my friend, finally at rest with the biggest ‘chief’ of them all! R.I.P.
