Winners have emerged for most of the sporting codes played at the New Zealand Area Schools Tournament in Wanganui as the event draws to a close today.
Hosted by Taihape Area School (TAS) at Springvale Park and Stadium in Wanganui, because of the facilities, the tournament involves around 350 country students divided into four regions – Northland, Central North Island, Top of the South and Bottom of the South.
The sporting codes include rugby, netball, basketball, football, volleyball, Ki o Rahi and golf.
TAS organiser Loni Martin said Central boys had won the rugby, while Northland girls had won the rugby sevens. Top of the South had won the football, while Northland added another scalp with the girls division.
In the well-contested netball, Bottom of the South had emerged the victors, while Central had taken the boys basketball crown and Northland the girls.
Martin said the remaining codes had yet to be decided.
North and South Island teams will be selected to play each other this morning and New Zealand Area Schools teams will be selected in each code to take on invitational Wanganui teams in most codes apart from netball this afternoon. The national area schools netball side will play an age-group Wanganui side.
