Wanganui scored its first senior grade representative rugby victory over Taranaki since 1987 with a resounding 43-12 against the Taranaki Development XV in a non first-class match at Hawera today.
Wanganui, preparing for a Ranfurly Shield challenge against Waikato next Saturday, scored seven tries and led 31-0 at half-time in cold and windy conditions.
The last Wanganui success against Taranaki was 14-9 in the WRFU’s official centennial year fixture at Spriggens Park 29 years ago.
Since then Taranaki has won 20 first class games against Wanganui, drew 26-all in 1996, and won eight non first-class matches. Wanganui’s last win in Taranaki was also in 1987 and in Hawera – 9-7 in an Anzac Weekend.
Kameli Kuruyabaki (2), Sam Madams, Campbell Hart, Lindsay Horrocks,Waitokia Te Rangatira and Cole Baldwin scored tries today with Dane Whale (3) and Craig Clare kicking conversions.
The Wanganui Development XV was beaten 19-7 (Dylan Malone try, Isireli Baleitavuki con) by Taranaki Under-19 who led 7-0 at half-time.
